Nicola Pitticas of Title IX

At Murrison & Wilson we’re privileged to work with so many successful business owners and keen to showcase our clients’ talents.

We would like to welcome New Entrepreneur of the Year Award winning Nicola Pitticas of Title1X to share her real experiences and tips to help business owners build up a successful business.

Q: What does your business do?

A: TitleIX helps young, talented and driven females athletes secure sports scholarships in the USA. The scholarship process requires knowledge and expertise which is exactly what we offer our clients.

“The level of customer service that we provide is key and really I measure my success against how successful our clients have been at their respective institutions.”

Q: How did you get started running TitleIX?

A: I am a former collegiate athlete and decided that I wanted to help other female athletes follow in my footsteps.

Q: How long has your business been running?

A: 3 years.

Q: What’s your background?

A: My background is sport, having played hockey to a very high level I think this has always given me a competitive edge.

Q: What was the biggest hurdle you faced starting up?

A: Getting people to believe that it was a good idea. And actually trying to decide when was the right time to go for it. I was lucky in the sense that I had a great support network, certain people in my life believing that I could do anything. My mum especially who as a hard working mother always, always instilled in me a sense of confidence as well as the belief that if I put my mind to something, no matter what that may be, that I was the type of person who could accomplish anything.

Q: How did you chose where to locate?

A: That was easy for me as I work from home.

Q: What is your top tip for anyone starting up a new business?

A: Have a vision. Try and be very strict with yourself and have clear cut standards that you want yourself and everyone else to stick to. Always try and think outside the box, if you were a customer buying a product or service what would you look for?

Q: Where do you plan your business to be in five years’ time?

A: I plan for it to have grown by about 30% from its initiation.

Q: What has been your best day, so far, in business and why?

A: Tough questions – I have had some really great days. One of my best moments was placing one of my first athletes at Stanford University – a top institution and a top scholarship. Closely followed by one of my favourite clients calling me to say she had accepted her scholarship to Vermont and was so overcome with emotion that even I got a frog in my throat. Lastly, was receiving my award for New Entrepreneur of the Year Award by Business Women Scotland Magazine last month.

Q: How do new clients find you and you find new clients?

A: Word of mouth, online and when I go out an actively recruit clients to our program.

Q: How do you kick start your working day?

A: I usually get up, have a cup of tea and some breakfast and then write my to-do list for the day.

Q: 12. How do you measure business success?

A: The level of customer service that we provide is key and really I measure my success against how successful our clients have been at their respective institutions.

Q: Business owners have so much to do every day, how do you manage your time?

A: Sometimes it is very stressful, clients call and contact you at all different times of the day and going on holiday isn’t really a holiday as I have to be available to everyone all the time. I just try and be pro-active and make sure I am staying on top of calls and emails so they don’t pile up as I get really stressed knowing someone is waiting to hear from me.

Q: What is your favourite part of your working week?

A: Getting my weekly update from clients who have started talking to prospective universities and hearing how excited they are on the end of the phone.

Q: If you could travel back in time, to when you started up, is there anything you would do differently?

A: I would have probably done it earlier.
